Citizen Voice is a bottom-up initiative at TU Delft. The initiative aims to support researchers and practitioners in fostering inclusive and meaningful participation in urban planning and design. We engage critically with current trends in public participation, including the increasing implementation of digital tools and artificial intelligence in participatory planning and design practices.
Citizen Voice started in 2021 from the bottom and has grown organically until today, receiving support from various institutions within and outside TU Delft (including the NWO and Horizon Europe). Over the past four years, we developed digital tools, interactive prototypes, and art exhibitions to engage citizens and communities in complex topics such as climate change and urban biodiversity. Through this participatory research approach, we deepen the understanding of how citizens and communities perceive their environment and how they interact with technologies.
TARGET AUDIENCE
Citizen Voice works with three principles: (1) inclusive participation in urban planning and design, (2) transdisciplinary and creative research methods, and (3) situated and open methodologies. We invite anyone who identifies with one of these principles to join us in this event to exchange experiences and discuss opportunities for collaboration. Everybody is welcome: We aim to engage with researchers, students, and practitioners, as well as support staff working with open science and citizen science.
WHAT TO EXPECT
This event serves as a dual milestone, celebrating the successful conclusion of the NWO-funded CIVILIAN project while officially launching Citizen Voice as a bottom-up TU Delft initiative. The event reflects on Citizen Voice’s journey, highlighting key insights, outcomes, and the collaborative efforts that made it possible. It also marks an exciting new beginning with the launch of our web platform, designed to extend the initiative’s impact by offering a space for continued learning, engagement, and collaboration.
We’ll start with a welcoming lunch and an introductory presentation about Citizen Voice, the team, and the projects we realised so far. This is followed by the core part of the event, which is a workshop to gather insights on barriers, enablers and trends in digital engagement, participatory planning and design, and transdisciplinary research and open science. The workshop is also an open invitation to join us in a position paper about these topics. After the workshop, participants are invited to explore Citizen Voice’s outputs through an exhibition. Drinks will close the session.
